Honda Civic vs. Hyundai Elantra

The 2026 Honda Civic and the 2025 Hyundai Elantra are among the best new compact cars available today. Both models have fuel-efficient engines, cabins packed with the latest infotainment and safety technology, and affordable price tags. But which compact is the better option? Read on to discover who comes out on top in the battle of the 2026 Honda Civic vs. the Hyundai Elantra.
Exterior Design
Small in stature only, the 2026 Honda Civic and the 2025 Hyundai Elantra are both big on style. The Civic is the more traditional option, with a classic sporty exterior that critics love. The Elantra’s looks are a little more innovative. Its wide, contemporary grille and geometric sculpted doors will turn heads, but they could also alienate some motorists. It’s very much a matter of taste whether you appreciate Hyundai’s design risks or not.
When sedans are falling out of favor, it’s strange that Hyundai only offers this traditional car shape. Honda gives you a little more choice, releasing its 2026 Civic in both sedan and hatchback models.
Performance and Handling
Both models have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as standard, although the Civic’s 150-hp motor has more grunt than the Elantra’s 147-hp base. While the Elantra is 0.8 seconds quicker off the mark, reaching 60 mph in 8.1 seconds, the Civic’s ride feels more refined.
If you want to reduce your gas bills, you’ll appreciate that both manufacturers offer hybrids. The Civic’s hybrid powertrain combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a pair of electric motors, while the Elantra’s features a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with a single electric motor. Here’s where we start to see some real differences between the models. The hybrid Civic produces 200 hp, which helps it reach 60 mph in just 6.2 seconds. Meanwhile, the hybrid Elantra and its 139 hp powertrain takes 8.4 seconds to get up to speed.
Both makers also have turbocharged options with manual transmissions for an engaging driving performance. The 2026 Civic Si’s 200-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder takes 6.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, but the turbo kicks in quickly for an exceptional driving experience. The Hyundai Elantra N Line’s 201-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder is a fraction of a second slower to accelerate. While a six-speed manual is standard, Hyundai also offers a seven-speed automatic. For more power, there’s the high-performance Elantra N with a 286-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. This model is similar to the Civic R, which may not return in 2026.
Fuel Efficiency
Both models have the strong fuel economy you’d expect from compacts. Of course, the hybrids are the most efficient. The hybrid Civic sedan is rated for 50 mpg in the city and 47 mpg on the highway. The hybrid Civic hatchback is just as fuel-efficient in the city, although fuel economy dips slightly to 45 mpg on the highway.
The base model Elantra hybrid has slightly lower fuel economy in the city, getting 49 mpg. However, it does a little better on the highway, getting 52 mpg. The narrow gap between the Civic and Elantra models is impressive, considering how much better the Civic accelerates.
The base Civic sedan gets 32 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway. That’s 2 mpg better than the standard Elantra, but it will equal the Civic’s numbers if you add the stop-start feature. The Civic hatchback achieves similar fuel economy to the Elantra, with ratings of 30 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.
Interior Space and Comfort
The Civic and Elantra both have generously sized cabins with ample space for passengers in the front and back. The Elantra’s interior boasts 100 cubic feet of passenger volume, while the Civic has only 96. However, the scales swing back around in the Civic’s favor when comparing cargo space. Their measurements are so close that you probably won’t notice. The real difference comes in the details. Hard plastics dominate the Elantra’s interior, making it feel much cheaper than the Civic’s cabin. That’s especially disappointing considering its smart exterior styling.
Technology and Infotainment
Honda and Hyundai offer all the tech features modern motorists expect, including touchscreens, Bluetooth, mobile connectivity, and sound systems. The Honda’s standard 7.0-inch infotainment screen is an inch smaller than the Hyundai’s, but it’s still large enough for easy navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired on both models as standard, although there are wireless options at higher trims. The Civic’s base model 4-speaker stereo will disappoint audiophiles, especially when compared to the Elantra’s 6-speaker version. Both vehicles have an 8-speaker option, but if you’re really serious about your music, you’ll appreciate the Honda’s high-end 12-speaker alternative.
Safety Features and Ratings
The NHTSA hasn’t rated the latest Civic yet, but it received an overall five-star crash rating in 2025, just like the 2025 Elantra. The IIHS hasn’t released its 2026 scores either, but in 2025 the Civic sedan was a Top Safety Pick and the hatchback a Top Safety Pick+. The 2025 Hyundai Elantra also received a Top Safety Pick+ title.
Both vehicles feature a comprehensive range of driver assistance features courtesy of the Honda Sensing and Hyundai SmartSense systems. Automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist are among the standard features. The Honda Civic is one of only a few compacts with adaptive cruise control as standard. This feature is only available on the mid- and high-level Elantra trims. But the Elantra does come with blind-spot monitoring, which is only an optional feature above the Civic’s base trim.
